HOW CAN YOU HELP?

We cannot pull all of this off by ourselves, we need your help! If you snorkel, dive, fish, even wade near any artificial structures please snap a photo of the underwater species living on or near it. Then submit your photos via the google form below.

Not a snorkeler or diver? See below for other ways you can help!

What happens with your photos?

Once images are submitted we will go through each one and identify the species living in the area, we’ll also take a special interest in identifying invasive species. Identified species will be added to our interactive map and your picture will be added to our photo gallery for others to see. As more people submit photos we will gain a clearer picture of what animals are inhabiting areas of the northern Gulf of Mexico. We will also be able to identify how invasive species are moving across the Gulf.

The maximum file size is 1 GB and must be in the form of an image. For research purposes please be as specific as possible-i.e. specific reefs, cities, coordinates. However, if you would like for the location to remain private please provide us with the state the photo was taken in.

Tips for Great Photo Submissions:

  • If you're diving, make sure the artificial reef structure is visible in the shot.

  • Capture anything out of the ordinary (living or non-living) on or near the structure.

  • Make sure identifying features of the organisms are visible in the shot.

  • Include a few different angles if possible!

  • If you are willing, don't forget to let us know where the photo was taken!

OTHER WAYS TO GET INVOLVED

LEARN MORE

Visit our "Learn More" page to access helpful links, learn about other research projects, and gain a better understanding of artificial reefs. The more we know the more we can educate others!

JOIN ANOTHER COMMUNITY SCIENCE PROJECT

Check out the "Useful Links" section of our "Learn More" page to see what other research projects and partner projects you can help out with.

MAINTAIN A FOULING
COMMUNITY

Fouling communities are diverse ecosystems found on things like dock or marina pilings. Head over to our "Learn More" page for helpful links on exploring these unique communities living on a dock near you!
